Mother of 16 children found confined amid human waste in Ohio to appear in court
Along with her husband and other relatives, Elizabeth Siders faces multiple charges, including sexual abuse, as the ‘house of horrors’ case expands
Elizabeth Siders will appear Wednesday before a Vinton County court in a hearing that opens a new chapter in the case of 16 minors found confined in a tiny room amid human waste inside a house in the village of Hamden, Ohio. The 34-year-old remains in custody and faces 19 counts of endangering children, as well as charges of sexual assault and illicit sexual conduct with a minor.
The appearance comes as new revelations broaden the scope of the investigation. Court documents show that Elizabeth Siders and her husband, Gary Siders II, took in a 17th minor for at least nine months in 2022, who was then between 13 and 16 years old. That minor was not among the 16 children rescued from the property on June 30, 2026, but later accused Gary Siders of abusing him while acting as a parent or guardian. Prosecutors had previously accused Elizabeth Siders of abusing that minor as well, although formal charges against her for that alleged act have not been filed to date.
The new information adds to an investigation that had already revealed a family history marked by child protective services interventions and allegations of sexual abuse. In January 2020, Gallia County social services began investigating the family after identifying problems with the children’s online schooling. Court records also documented cockroaches, flies, and mosquitoes inside the home, medical issues, and elevated lead levels.
The children remained with the Siders family under a court-supervised plan. The case was closed in October that year, but authorities intervened again in December after doctors reported the family was once more failing to attend the children’s medical appointments. A new court case opened in January 2021 and the children continued under supervision, but that case was closed months later.
Shortly after, authorities launched another investigation for truancy because none of the children were attending classes. Officials tried to locate the family but were unable to find them. In January 2022, the county closed that probe without locating the children.
Documents also state that, between January and September 2022, Gary and Elizabeth Siders allegedly engaged in sexual conduct with a minor aged between 13 and 16. The alleged victim was not one of their 16 children. Those accusations did not result in charges until 2026.
The Siders married in 2008, when she was 15 and he was 18, and had their first child two months later. By 2022 they already had 12 children, at the time they took in the 17th minor mentioned in the new documents. Elizabeth Siders later gave birth to premature twin girls who died shortly after being born in November that year, and she had two more sets of twins in January 2024 and January 2025.
In December 2025, Vinton County authorities and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation began probing allegations of sexual abuse involving two minors. The investigation later expanded to inquiries into the married couple and other family members.
Surrounded by human waste
On June 30, 2026, investigators arrived at the Hamden property. There they found 16 minors, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years, living in conditions authorities described as “subhuman and deplorable.” Many were mainly confined to a room of roughly 3.5 square meters, surrounded by human waste. None were enrolled in school and some showed severe developmental delays and speech difficulties.
Seven minors were hospitalized and two were airlifted to medical centers. All were placed in state custody or under the care of other relatives.
The case widened on August 21, when a grand jury indicted Gary II, Elizabeth and Christina Siders on 19 counts of endangering children, while Gary Siders Sr. was charged with 16 counts. The charges also included two counts of sexual assault and two counts of illicit sexual conduct with a minor for Gary II and Elizabeth. Two other men connected to the family, Joshua Saunders III and Brandon Henderson, were also charged with sexual offenses against minors.
As Elizabeth Siders awaits her hearing, the case also faces questions about the defendants’ fitness to stand trial. Gary Siders Sr., 73, was found incompetent to proceed after a judge accepted the results of an evaluation. His attorney said his mental health had been deteriorating for years and that his condition was “not restorable.”
