A massive police operation, codenamed Nessi, against an international drug smuggling ring netted 11 tons of hashish in Toledo province on Wednesday.
The investigation began in March when a medium-scale supply operation was uncovered in Madrid. Further probing led police to a gang that smuggled the drug from North Africa in gas containers and distributed it across Spain and Western Europe. Agents made 35 arrests and seized 150,000 euros in cash, 14 vehicles and 109 cellphones.
In addition to raiding two warehouses in Yeles and Villaluenga de la Sagra, police stopped two trucks, one loaded with fruit and vegetables and the other with clothes, containing vast amounts of the drug bound for the Netherlands and France.
