EL PAÍS, the leading Spanish-language newspaper, opens an edition in the United States. Conceived for a diverse and thriving community of more than 60 million people, EL PAÍS US aspires to be the informative voice and meeting place of the Latino universe in the North American country. With this new venture, the newspaper also advances in its successful presence in the continent, which began in 2013 with the birth of EL PAÍS America, and which already has its own editions in Mexico, Colombia and Chile, in addition to EL PAÍS in English, which will continue to focus on the United States.

One of the objectives of EL PAÍS US is to offer a closer and more local coverage for those who have Spanish as their mother tongue in the United States and, given its boom, for those who use it as a second language too. Politics, health, business, education, culture and entertainment will be the focus of the efforts of a newsroom, directed by Inés Santaeulalia, which will work on the ground from New York to California. It will also have the support of one of the largest networks of journalists in the Spanish-speaking world, with nearly 400 journalists in bureaus and delegations around the world, especially in Mexico and the rest of Latin America.

The new edition aims to directly address Hispanic readers with the objective of informing and telling stories that help interpret their reality and aspirations. Those of a community that is experiencing a moment of strength, growing in numbers and influence, and occupying a greater political, economic and cultural space every day. Its presence in the music scene is already undeniable and in a historically monolingual society like the United States it is no longer surprising to hear Spanish on any stage. Cinema, television, sports and art speak more Spanish today than ever before. EL PAÍS US will closely follow the great Latino stars and those who are making their way, focusing on the Hispanic cultural and entertainment world.

“It is an edition made in and from the United States, which will allow us to advance in our commitment to inform the Latin community. Our challenge is to offer a voice and a rigorous informative space to the more than 60 million Spanish-speaking people in the United States, with the aim of encouraging participation in the political, social, economic and cultural life of a key community in the daily structuring of U.S. democracy,” says the editor-in-chief of EL PAÍS, Pepa Bueno.

The launch of EL PAÍS US comes at a key moment. On November 5, Americans will choose their next president between Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Donald Trump. The Latino vote, which already totals 36 million voters, will define the outcome of the polls because no candidate can reach the White House without the support of Hispanics. This electoral campaign will also speak Spanish and the messages and promises of both parties will look to this segment of the population with greater interest than ever.

EL PAÍS US, in addition to the website, will have its own social networks on Instagram and Twitter. To strengthen its presence on Facebook, a group will be created on the EL PAÍS account, which has more than 300,000 followers in the United States, under the name “Latinos en Estados Unidos.”
