Olot porter who killed 11 seniors given 127-year jail sentence
Joan Vila Dilmé said he wanted to help his victims to die “to ease their sufferings”

A former porter at a seniors residence in Olot, Girona, was sentenced on Friday to 127 years and six months in prison, two weeks after a jury found him guilty of the murder of 11 elderly residents.
Joan Vila Dilmé, who said during his trial that he wanted to help his victims to die “to ease their sufferings,” killed the residents by forcing them to drink toxic substances such as bleach.
The 47-year-old Vila, who at first faked that he was suffering from mental illness, later confessed to the killings. Vila worked for five years at the La Caritat convalescent home in Olot.
Vila will serve 40 years of the sentence, which is the maximum allowed by law. He will also have to pay the families of his victims compensation of 369,000 euros each.
