El Prat lends Madrid a hand in EuroVegas bid

Adjacent El Prat airport imposes building restrictions

Madrid's efforts to secure the right to host American tycoon Sheldon Adelson's EuroVegas development have received a boost after a delegation from Barcelona, which was mulling a bid to lure it to Catalonia, left a Las Vegas meeting with more hindrances than incentives.

The main stumbling block to a successful bid is the proximity to El Prat airport of the land mooted for the casino complex, which prevents the construction of a dozen skyscrapers desired by Adelson's Vegas Sands group due to aviation safety restrictions in the zone. The proposed development, the delegation decided, is also far removed from the "Mediterranean style" foreseen by the Catalan government. Vegas Sands wants to build a replica of a strip in Las Vegas.

Madrid's presentation was due to take place overnight on Sunday. The regional government states the complex will create 164,000 direct and 97,000 indirect jobs, but there are many legal obstacles still to be overcome due to Adelson's considerable demands for autonomy.
