Foreign Ministry tells its envoys how to handle Garzón case
Secret communication sent to ambassadors in bid to improve Spain's image abroad Judge was removed from the bench after being found guilty of misconduct over wiretaps
Foreign Minister José Manuel García Margallos has sent a secret communication to all Spanish ambassadors around the world instructing them on how to handle inquiries and concerns about the recent conviction and court bench suspension of Judge Baltasar Garzón, EL PAÍS has learned.
Sent in the past two weeks, the two-page instruction tells diplomats to remind foreign governments that express concerns that Spain is a country of law and order and that Garzón's conviction and 11-year suspension as a judge was approved by the entire Supreme Court bench.
García Margallo's order is part of a broader strategy to improve Spain's image abroad.
The Garzón conviction - for ordering phone taps of defendants in a public corruption case - made news around the world, most of it critical coverage of the Supreme Court's ruling.
