Fuentes earns her silver

After three bronzes, synchronized swimmer goes one better

Having already had three bronzes placed around her neck at the World Swimming Championships in Shanghai, synchronized swimmer Andrea Fuentes went one better by winning Spain's first silver medal of the competition in the solo free final on Wednesday.

Once again Russia's Natalia Ischenko showed her dominance by taking the gold, her third so far in Shanghai (she did not compete in the Russian team that clinched team technical gold on Tuesday) and her 13th-ever in the championships, with 98.550 points.

Fuentes, who has already secured third places in the solo technical, duet tecnical and team technical events at the competition, scored 96.520 points, relegating China's Sun Wenyan, who scored 95.840, to bronze. In all three previous events, the Chinese had taken second place from the Spanish team.

It was the Catalan swimmer's first medal as a soloist in the world championships. And she achieved it by returning to the Édith Piaf Non, je ne regrette rien routine that won her silver in the European Championships in Budapest.

"I try to improve every day, but having the best trainer in the world makes it a lot easier," she said, referring to coach Anna Tarrés.

"I didn't like not being in the same shape as I was this morning [in the qualifying round], but it's normal to be tired, I gave it my all.

"I went out less nervous than I was this morning and I don't know why, but I don't care about anything; I am second and I couldn't be happier," added the swimmer from Tarragona.

The silver is a resounding success for the team, commented her coach, adding that Fuentes was arriving at the peak of her maturity in these world championships.

London calling

Despite days carrying various fitness problems, Spanish swimmer Kiko Hervás managed to book his berth at next year's Olympic Games at the Shanghai championships on Wednesday. And he did it the same way as his female compatriot Erika Villaécija did on Tuesday: earning direct qualification with his performance in the 10km open water race, where he finished sixth.

"I am really happy, and very emotional," said Hervás, who completed the swim in 1:54.34, 10 seconds behind gold medal winner Spyros Gianniotis of Greece.
