Nuclear plant bosses could face long jail terms for leaks
Ascó officials accused of covering up series of accidents
On Friday, Tarragona public prosecutors charged four high-ranking officials at the Ascó nuclear plant with criminal negligence.
If found guilty of offences that include exposing workers to radioactive material and falsifying documents, the officials could face jail terms of up to 16 years.
The prosecution said that a series of leaks that took place over four months in 2007 were "not caused by mechanical faults but carelessness and failings." Campaigners Greenpeace have asked the government not to renew the nuclear plant's license when it expires next November.
