Parties reach pact for anti-downloading law
Eleventh-hour agreement reached over new measures to deal with internet piracy
The Socialists and the opposition Popular Party reached an agreement on Monday to salvage the illegal website downloading measure known as the "Sinde law."
According to sources from both parties, the two sides hammered out the agreement by adding an amendment to the law following weeks of negotiations. The bill will now go to the Senate this week for consideration as part of the Sustainable Economy Law.
The PP wanted guarantees that the courts, not the government, would have the final say when it came to closing down websites that promote illegal downloads of movies, television programs, music or other materials.
The Sinde law had failed to muster enough support last December in Congress.
