Ana Botín takes over Santander's British division
Daughter being groomed to take over from father?
Ana Patricia Botín, chairman of Spanish bank Banesto, will leave her post to take over Santander UK, financial sources said yesterday.
The move follows the announcement that Antonio Horta-Osorio, the head of Banco Santander's British affiliate, will be joining Lloyds Banking Group as its CEO. The 46-year-old Portuguese native had led Santander's expansion in Britain including buying up Abbey, Alliance & Leicester and parts of Bradford & Bingley.
Botín, the 50-year-old daughter of Grupo Santander executive chairman Emilio Botín, had been head of Banesto since 2002. Considered by The Financial Times as the second most-influential woman in Europe, Botín was instrumental in getting the institution listed on the Ibex 35.
Her post will go to former Unión Fenosa president Antonio Basagoiti García-Tuñón, father of the Basque Popular Party leader Antonio Basagoiti.
