Freedom 250: What to know about the Independence Day celebrations with Trump in the spotlight
Presidential rallies, a 16-day fair, military parades, and record-breaking fireworks displays will mark the anniversary

The celebration of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence was meant to be a national commemoration capable of bringing millions of people together around a historic date. However, even before the main festivities have begun, President Donald Trump’s prominence has turned the anniversary into a source of controversy. Criticism has mounted among historians and opponents, who accuse the White House of turning a national celebration into a platform for the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.
The controversy has been simmering for weeks. In mid-June, the White House hosted UFC Freedom 250, a mixed martial arts event held on the presidential grounds and promoted as part of the anniversary activities. The event, held to coincide with Trump’s 80th birthday, served as a preview of celebrations that, in the eyes of many observers, bear the president’s personal stamp.
These are the main activities planned as part of Freedom 250, the organization launched by Trump to coordinate much of the bicentennial celebrations.
Trump rally
The official kickoff will take place on June 24 at the National Mall in Washington. What was initially supposed to be a night of concerts — a plan that was canceled after several announced artists withdrew from the lineup, believing the event had become politicized — has turned into an event led by Trump, who has described it as “the greatest rally of all time.”
The ceremony will include military flyovers, performances by Army and Marine Corps bands, Armed Forces choirs, and musical performances by Lee Greenwood, the composer of God Bless the USA, and tenor Christopher Macchio. The president will deliver a speech to officially open the Great American State Fair.

The Great American State Fair
The centerpiece of Freedom 250 will be the Great American State Fair, a free fair that will take place on the National Mall from June 25 to July 10. Organizers expect between 100,000 and 150,000 visitors per day.
Although the official website states that the fair will feature more than 150 exhibits from the 50 U.S. states and six U.S. territories, at least seven states led by Democrats have said they will not participate due to the politicization of the event.
The organizers say there will be state pavilions, technology demonstrations, film screenings, concerts, military displays, family activities, and a Ferris wheel set up in front of Washington’s monuments.
Two days of the event will be inspired by the “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) initiative, promoted by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which adds a political dimension to the fair.
From Theodore Roosevelt to Mount Rushmore
The celebrations will also extend beyond the capital. On July 1, Trump will participate in the dedication of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota. The event will include a ceremonial arrival by train and a reenactment inspired by the Rough Riders, the famous cavalry regiment associated with the former president.
Two days later, on July 3, Rushmore 250 will be held at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. The event will feature family-friendly activities, military tributes, and a fireworks display in front of the monument depicting the faces of four U.S. presidents.
In addition, throughout the year, the so-called Freedom Trucks and the Freedom 250 Mobile Museum will tour the country — initiatives designed to bring historical exhibits and educational activities to different communities.
July 4
The highlight of the celebrations will be Independence Day. New York will host the International Naval Review and Sail4th 250, a gathering of military ships and historic vessels from more than 20 countries that will sail through the city’s harbor.
Meanwhile, Washington, D.C., will host the “Salute to America 250” event, which will include a patriotic parade, military demonstrations, tributes to veterans, and musical performances. Organizers promise a fireworks display lasting nearly 40 minutes and featuring hundreds of thousands of fireworks.
Trump has also announced that he will headline another political event in the capital that same day, which he has described as “the most spectacular Trump rally ever.”
The scale of the celebrations makes this anniversary one of the largest national commemorations since the Bicentennial in 1976. However, the debate over Trump’s role threatens to overshadow each of the events.
