North America’s fiercest soccer rivalry enters another crucial chapter this Sunday. The 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup will be decided in a classic showdown that will once again pit the two most important teams in the confederation, the United States and Mexico, against each other. . An electric atmosphere is expected in the stands at NRG Stadium in Houston, fueled not only by passion for the sport but also by the current political and social climate in the host country.

The Trump administration’s immigration policy has generated discontent and fear, not only among undocumented immigrants, but throughout the entire Latino population, both native-born and those who have been living in the country legally for years. there were even reports that during the 2025 Gold Cup matches, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents would check the documents of stadium attendees to ensure that there were no undocumented or irregular immigrants, as they have done during the Club World Cup being held simultaneously on U.S. soil.

Latino pride — which has been clearly evident throughout the tournament — will undoubtedly play a central role in Sunday’s match. And a victory for Mexico would take on symbolic value amid this uncertain social climate.

United States vs. Mexico

Mexico is the current champion after defeating Panama in the 2023 Gold Cup final with a score of 1-0, and if it repeats its victory, it will win its 10th cup. For its part, the United States has won seven cups throughout its history in this tournament. They are the two teams with the most Gold Cup trophies.

So far, a total of 82 goals have been scored in the current championship, with an average of 2.73 per game. The top scorer, Ismael Díaz, with six goals, was eliminated after Panama lost to Honduras in the quarterfinals. The next three top scorers will play in the final: Mexico’s César Montes (Lokomotiv Moscow), and the United States’ Diego Luna (Real Salt Lake) and Malik Tillman (PSV), who each scored three goals during the tournament.

This match will be the last official game for both teams before their countries co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Mexican national team will kick off the tournament at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, while the United States will debut against a yet-to-be-determined opponent at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The final will be played at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, which has a capacity of more than 72,000 spectators. This stadium regularly hosts many U.S. team matches, as well as friendly games where the Mexican team serves as the home team. Similarly, the venue will host seven matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup (under the name Houston Stadium): five in the group stage, one in the round of 32, and one in the round of 16.

Below are the key details of the Gold Cup final.
