More than 22,000 participants in Buñol, Valencia will be taking part today in the annual Tomatina festival, the war of vegetables in which 160,000 tomatoes are hurled. A firecracker will sound at 11am to mark the battle’s commencement, as trucks file in to supply and arm attendees with this red ammunition.
The world-famous tomato-throwing festival is more than 70 years old and always takes place on the last Wednesday of August. It began in 1945 when a fight between two youngsters ended in a huge tomato fight in the town’s main square.
