Clean run with no major injuries on second day of Sanfermines
Only one reported goring during running, which lasted 2 minutes 14 seconds
The bulls bearing the El Tajo and La Reina livestock brands had a good debut on Wednesday in the streets of Pamplona, during the second Running of the Bulls of the Sanfermines fiestas.
The run was characterized by its speed – two minutes and 14 seconds – and by the fact that the joselitos (so named because all these bulls are owned by breeder José Miguel Arroyo, Joselito) mostly stayed together as they careered throught the narrow streets of the city.
Once again, that key curve was packed with foreign spectators, who are unfamiliar with the better practices
There was only one reported injury from a goring.
The tame bullocks took the lead as soon as the gates were flung open, and the first 200 meters were covered at full speed.
From the Plaza Consistorial to the bend around the Mercaderes and Estafeta street, the run was clean, and just for a few moments one of the bigger bulls managed to lead the charge.
Once again, that key curve on the streets of Pamplona was packed with foreign spectators, who are unfamiliar with the better practices of running with the bulls and who are brought to the fiestas by travel agencies. For the second day running, one of the leading animals took care of the task of clearing the way, in order to bring a bit of order to the proceedings and open up the route.
The second part of the route continued as it had begun, with the most serious incident of the run coming in the approach to the bull ring, where there were some violent falls and the only goring of the morning, with one runner suffering two wounds in the back and the leg. The bulls arrived in the ring without incident, and without any changes in direction.
The Red Cross and hospital staff reported that the one injured runner was being treated by a medical team at the bull ring.
Another two runners with bruises – one to the face – were taken by ambulance to the Centro Hospitalario de Navarra.
This afternoon the six bulls from the El Tajo and La Reina stockbreeders will be fought from 6.30pm onward by bullfighters Diego Urdiales, Morenito de Aranda and Saúl Jiménez Fortes.
