A noir thriller about the drug industry, Side Effects is said to be Steven Soderbergh's final film

Side Effects has been touted as Steven Soderbergh’s last ever film and if that really does turn out to be the case — though somehow it sounds hard to believe — it would make a fairly fitting note on which to end. A movie every bit as schizophrenic as the versatile director’s eclectic filmography, it begins in the style of an Erin Brockovich-type investigation into the pharmaceutical industry before entering more lurid psychological thriller waters. Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) plays a suicidal New Yorker prescribed a series of anti-depressants by psychiatrist Jude Law, only to suffer adverse reactions with devastating consequences. Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones also feature.

The peculiar-sounding Upside Down is the latest from Argentinean filmmaker Juan Solanas, son of Fernando Solanas, co-director (with Octavio Getino) of The Hour of the Furnaces (1968), a landmark of the Third Cinema movement. A French Canadian-produced sci-fi romance, it stars Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess as two star-crossed lovers separated not just by social class and an unfair political system, but also by gravity: each lives on opposing twinned planets that pull in different directions.

Another ‘Secret’

From the producers of the Oscar-winning The Secret in their Eyes, Argentinean thriller Tesis sobre un homicidio again stars Ricardo Darín, this time as a criminal law expert who becomes convinced that one of his students (Alberto Ammann, Cell 211) is behind a vicious murder committed on the doorstep of the law faculty.
