The archbishop of Madrid and head of Spain’s bishops, Antonio María Rouco Varela, on Sunday called on traditional family values to act as a bulwark against the current crisis. Speaking during a Family Mass held in Madrid’s Plaza de Colón, he also appealed to the Christian faith to end “the chilling tragedy of abortion.”

"Only the family, conceived and experienced in the plenitude of its truth, as taught by the unequivocal, indestructible language of human nature, can clear up the horizon of hope for man and for the society of our time,” said Rouco in the square, which was filled with thousands of people.

“Christian families do, and will, continue to represent hope for our days,” said Rouco.
