Protestors arrested at Congress taken before a judge to hear charges
High Court rejects police petition to charge protestors with more serious crimes Juvenile prosecutors weigh whether to press charges against one minor
The 34 people who were arrested in Tuesday’s altercations with police outside Congress were waiting to see a Madrid judge late Thursday. According to a provincial court statement, the demonstrators could face charges ranging from disturbing the peace and civil disobedience to resisting arrest and assault.
The police had wanted to the High Court to assume jurisdiction and charge the suspects with crimes related to assault on government institutions. But High Court Judge Santiago Pedraz said that the tribunal does not have jurisdiction in any of the cases.
A total of 35 people, including a minor, were detained during Tuesday’s organized protests outside of Congress. Juvenile prosecutors were still studying late Thursday whether or not to charge the minor.
Lawyers for the protestors said they would file charges against the police for using excessive force.
