Spanish ambassador to Poland sacked over soccer rant

Diplomat forget himself as La Roja stormed to victory over the French team at Euro 2012

Thirteen days after the quarterfinal match between Spain and France in the European soccer championship, the Spanish ambassador to Poland has been removed from office over some humorous comments against the French that were caught on film.

Francisco Fernández Fábregas, a seasoned diplomat with a long career in Europe and Africa, exclaimed "Vamos, a dar por saco a los franceses!" ("Let's screw the French!") and "Vamos, champán francés!" ("Quick! Some French champagne!") at the dinner held in his official residence to watch Spain's 2-0 win over its neighbor to the north.

The moment was caught by a cameraman, and depicts a euphoric ambassador sporting a Spanish team shirt given to him by team captain Iker Casillas. He and his wife are seen celebrating with a group of Spanish entrepreneurs living in Warsaw.

Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo dismissed him 13 days later, although nobody at the ministry was available for comment. Fábregas, 67, had been ambassador to Poland since 2008.
