Train crash in Catalonia injures 10
Driver taken to hospital in serious condition Collision is third accident on Rodalies light rail network in 21 days

Ten people were injured when a train, thought to be traveling at excessive speed, collided with a buffer at Mataró station in Barcelona on Thursday morning. The most seriously hurt was the driver of the Rodalies light rail network train, who spent 40 minutes trapped in the cabin until firemen managed to free him. He was later taken to Mataró hospital.
The crash is the third accident on the Renfe Rodalies light rail network in the last 21 days.
Around 50 passengers were traveling aboard the train at the time of the incident, said a Renfe spokeman. Some of those who were initially taken to hospital have already been discharged.
The “inappropriate speed” of the train is thought to be the cause of the crash, according to Rodalies de Cataluña chief Miguel Ángel Remacha.
Specialists are now examining whether the crash was caused by human or mechanical error.
