Soldier dies from rebel fire in Afghanistan
Victim only fourth Spaniard to die from gunfire injuries during mission
A Spanish soldier died on Sunday after being shot in Afghanistan, the Defense Ministry reported. The victim was First Sergeant Joaquín Moya Espejo, 35, a native of Córdoba and father of one. Sergeant Moya was part of one of the Operational Mentor Liaison Teams tasked with training the Afghan army.
The attack occurred northwest of Ludina, in Badghis province, where the Spanish training team came under fire from light weapons operated at long range by rebels. The sergeant was hit in the chest and died aboard the US helicopter that evacuated him to the nearest hospital.
Moya Espejo was the fourth member of the Spanish military to die from gunfire in Afghanistan; most of the 97 casualties have been due to accidents and bomb attacks.
