Real eats Osasuna for breakfast

Ronaldo bangs in another hat-trick in 7-1 demolition of Osasuna at noon

It was an earlier start than normal for Real Madrid at the Bernabéu on Sunday as for the first time it found itself in the new noon kick-off slot - a move to give Liga fans in China the chance to watch a match at primetime. But pasta for breakfast seemed to sit well with Mourinho's forces, who destroyed a 10-man Osasuna 7-1, which included one more hat-trick for Cristiano Ronaldo - his fourth in La Liga so far this season.

The Portuguese forward, who had paraded his Golden Boot award for the 40 goals he notched up last year ahead of kick-off, opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, before Ibrahima drew level eight minutes later for Osasuna, which only the previous weekend had put an end to Levante's heroic undefeated run.

But within three minutes Madrid was back on top through a goal by Pepe, with Gonzalo Higuaín adding a third six minutes before half time. Ronaldo banged in his second from the penalty spot after an incident that saw young Osasuna defender Eneko Satrústegui sent off and completed his treble in the 57th. Substitute Karim Benzema thumped in two more to complete the rout.

The only low for Mourinho in a match that allowed Turkish midfielder Nuri Sahin to get his first minutes as a Real player was seeing winger Angel di María - the architect of the first three goals - carried off with a thigh injury at the start of the second half. "Seasons are like this; you lose one player and you gain another," the coach said.

The result leaves Madrid top of the table on 28 points, with Barcelona, which was playing away at Athletic at press time, in second and Valencia leapfrogging local rival Levante into third after its 0-2 win in their heated Saturday night meeting.

In Saturday's Andalusian derby, big-spending Málaga once again failed to impress as it tied 0-0 away to Betis. Manuel Pellegrini's team remains down in sixth position, one point ahead of Seville, which could only manage a 0-0 tie at Mallorca on Saturday - its fourth scoreless tie away from home in a row.

Other results: Zaragoza 2-2 Sporting; Granada 0-0 Racing; Espanyol 0-0 Villarreal; Rayo 4-0 R. Sociedad.

Planning a better Bernabéu

Last week Madrid City Hall approved a change to the capital's planning laws allowing Real Madrid soccer club to build a 12,250-square-meter leisure complex on prime real estate in front of its Santiago Bernabéu stadium facing the Castellana, one of the city's main thoroughfares. The move is part of an ambitious project that will also see the construction of a 600-space parking lot below the 85,000 all-seater stadium, along with a makeover of its concrete exterior and the enclosure of the last of its three stands.

In return Real Madrid will give City Hall a 6,858-square-meter plot behind the stadium that currently houses a mall that has been struggling to attract tenants for several years. It is to be turned into a children's play park. Real Madrid will also give City Hall four other plots of land in the south of the city, to be used for housing and recreation areas.

Real is being charged 6.6 million euros by City Hall for increasing the surface area it will occupy around the Bernabéu. The club says the building work will cost around 200 million euros, and will begin in two years.

Speaking at the club's extraordinary general meeting on September 25, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez said: "The stadium will be a global architectural achievement. It will be unique, the best in the world and the summit of the 21st century." City Hall says the project will create around 3,000 jobs directly, and around 600 others when the complex is completed. It adds that the Bernabéu will attract even more visitors, providing extra tax revenue for the city's coffers.
