Mubarak crony's assets frozen following his arrest in Spain

Judge sets bail at 12 millions euros for businessman who fled Egypt before dictator's ouster

Police froze millions of euros in bank accounts, properties and luxury vehicles tied to Egyptian-born businessman Hussein Salem, who appeared before the High Court on Friday in Madrid to face corruption charges.

Salem, one of ousted Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak's closest aides who was arrested on Thursday night on suspicion of embezzling public funds, was granted bail of 12 million euros. His son Khaled Salem, and Turkish businessman Ali Evsen, who were also arrested, were granted six million and 12 million euros, respectively. Salem is alleged to have profited by selling gas to Israel below market prices. According to Egyptian media, he fled on February 3, eight days before Mubarak's ouster.
