Immigrants pitched into sea given up for dead

Total of 22 sub-Saharans may have died after craft sank off coast of Almería

Rescue workers are still searching for the bodies of the occupants of the boat that sank near Adra in Almería on Friday. The Civil Guard located the sinking skiff at around midnight last night, 23 nautical miles south of the coast.

They were able to rescue 29 sub-Saharan immigrants (primarily men, with just two women and two children on board), who were still clinging to the hull of the capsized boat at approximately 2.45am. Another man was found in the water.

A special team has been assigned to search for the bodies of the remaining 19 immigrants still thought to be in the water after three bodies, two of which were children, were found.

But rescue teams do not expect to find any of the immigrants still alive as the average survival time in the 17ºC water at this time of year is only 10 hours.
