Catalan police squad chief targeted in drug inquiry

Anti-corruption investigator accused by judge of helping cocaine traffickers evade justice

The chief of the anti-corruption squad of the Catalan regional police and five other officers have been targeted by a judge for allegedly helping a cocaine-trafficking ring.

The judge believes that Antoni Salleras and his men kept information from him during a court investigation to protect the drug gang.

The case has the judiciary and the Mossos on opposite sides with regional police authorities defending the "honesty and integrity" of their members.

Catalonia interior chief Felip Puig on Wednesday came out in defense of the six officers who are under judicial inquiry, saying they have "impeccable" reputations.

Judge Joaquín Aguirre was investigating a drug ring that was allegedly operating from two brothels outside Barcelona when he reportedly discovered that the gang was being protected by members of the police squad.

According to judicial sources, the judge had ordered phone taps and other surveillance on the officers and suspects.
