Police value art heist haul at 2.7 million euros
Sculpture worth 800,000 euros among treasures taken by gang of thieves in Getafe
A sculpture by Basque artist Eduardo Chillida worth 800,000 euros was the among the 28 pieces three hooded thieves made off with on Saturday when they stole a truck containing important works.
The heist, which took place at a warehouse in Getafe, is considered to be the biggest one of its kind in Spain in decades, police said. The truck also contained works by Picasso and Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Police estimated the entire value of the work to be 2.7 million euros.
A police spokesman said yesterday that the truck was found empty on Tuesday. No arrests have been made, but police believe that the assailants had help from someone "on the inside." A security surveillance camera captured the robbers as they were entering the truck and driving off.
