Britney Spears and Sam Asghari split after a year of marriage
The two have been together since 2016, and tied the knot last year after the singer was released from her controversial guardianship
Singer Britney Spears, 41, and her husband, Sam Asghari, a 29-year-old model, personal trainer and actor of Iranian origin, are splitting up after a year of marriage. That’s according to an exclusive report by the celebrity news site TMZ, with the news later confirmed by People magazine through “multiple sources”.
TMZ reported that “sources with direct knowledge” of the couple confirmed the split. At the moment, Spears and Asghari — who are usually very active on their respective social networks — have not commented publicly on the breakup, nor have their representatives. A few hours after the news of their breakup broke, the artist posted on her Instagram that she wants to buy a horse. According to TMZ, the breakup occurred a few days ago following a big fight, in which Spears accused Asghari of infidelity.
TMZ reported that sources said Asghari had moved out of the couple’s house and is now living alone. “It’s only a matter of time before Sam files for divorce,” said one source. Hours later, it was confirmed: according to People, Asghari had filed for divorce. Representatives of both avoided responding to the media.
Sources claimed that the last few months have been difficult for the couple, with the two constantly fighting. They said that while Asghari has publicly supported the pop star’s often erratic behavior, he was privately tired of it. According to People, Spears’ inner circle have been “concerned” about her well-being and mental health since February. The couple have not posted a photo together on social media since the end of June. Nor did they make any mention of their wedding anniversary, which was in June.
Although the two signed a prenup, a source told TMZ that Spears may sign a check to settle things financially. The singer has an estimated fortune of more than $60 million, and she accuses her father, Jamie Spears, of taking more than $6 million of her money when she was under his ironclad legal conservatorship.
Spears and Asghari met in 2016, when he was part of one of the singer’s music videos. The two got engaged in September 2021, just before she was released from her controversial 13-year legal guardianship. From the beginning, Asghari was key to her fight to be released from the conservatorship, and even spoke out against it on social media before Spears herself. “I have zero respect for someone trying to control our relationship and constantly throwing obstacles in our way. In my opinion, Jamie is a total dick,” he wrote on an Instagram story, in reference to her father.
In April 2022, the couple announced that they were expecting their first child together, but just a month later, Spears had a miscarriage. The two were married in Paris in June last year in a ceremony attended by famous faces such as Madonna, Selena Gomez, Paris Hilton, Drew Barrymore and Donatella Versace, who designed Spears’ dress.
If Spears and Asghari formally end their marriage, it would be the singer’s third divorce. In 2004, she married her childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas, but the marriage was annulled 55 hours later. That same year, in the fall, she married dancer Kevin Federline. The two separated in the spring of 2007. Spears and Federline have two children together, Jayden, 17, and Sean, 16.
