One missing after weekend of rain, snow and cold temperatures in Spain
Around 53,000 properties left without electricity in Menorca and Asturias, with 1,300 students forced to stay home and problems on the roads due to snow drifts
One person was still missing on Monday morning after a weekend of rain, snow and low temperatures across Spain, due to the arrival of a mass of polar air on Friday over the Iberian peninsula.
The authorities are currently searching for a young man who was fishing on Sunday in a rocky area in the A Coruña municipality of Camariñas, and who may have fallen into the sea. Two hikers who got lost on Saturday when they were descending the Puigpedrós summit in the Pyrenees, between Meranges (Girona) and France, have been located. Both were in good health.
Strong or persistent showers are also expected in Cantabria and the Balearic Islands
The bad weather has also left 53,000 households without electricity on the Balearic Island of Menorca and in Asturias. In this latter region, 1,300 students will be staying at home due to bad weather conditions.
There are currently disruptions to train services in Asturias and there are problems on roads in the north of Spain due to snowdrifts. The bad weather is expected to continue on Monday, with warnings for 29 provinces and the North African exclave city of Melilla. The highest alerts are in Burgos, Castellón and Tarragona.
Strong or persistent showers are also expected in Cantabria and the Balearic Islands, with snowfall in the northern half of the peninsula. The snow will affect areas above 1,000 meters of altitude in the northwest, 700 meters in the Pyrenees, and 800 meters in the rest of the north of the country.
