Madrid’s Prado Museum has launched a new website that seeks to offer a more modern image of one of the world’s leading art galleries.

Developed over the course of three years with support from telecoms firm Telefónica, the new site places the emphasis on images rather than words, offering virtual visits that can be enhanced with streaming music and a semantic search engine that aims to provide more relevant results.

The site also features a multimedia section including videos of past conferences, information about upcoming shows and curated tours

The new website, which replaces the one launched in 2007, is able to relate artworks to artists, museum activities and other elements, making for a more comprehensive experience.

Each of the 10,000 pieces available for online perusal come with images that can be zoomed in and out of, technical data, explanatory text, tags connecting to related content, bibliographies of academic material, details of the catalogues in which the work is included, and its precise location inside the Prado.

The site also features a multimedia section containing videos of past conferences, information about upcoming shows and curated tours.

The semantic search engine adapts to each visitor’s needs. For example, typing in “Titian’s bacchanal” will not only bring up results for all related images, but also other related topics such as mythological gods, nudes, metamorphosis, and so on. The system offers recommended content based on the way the artworks have been categorized on the website.

The Prado site also offers more personalized visits through a social tool called “My Prado,” which enables visitors to create and save favorite itineraries, post comments, and share thoughts. State broadcaster RNE’s Radio 3 station has developed a musical selection to go with the permanent collection’s theme-based online tours.
