King Felipe VI gets to work by holding first meeting with PM
New monarch will soon travel to the Vatican and Spain’s neighboring countries
Felipe VI began his work as the new king of Spain by holding his first meeting as monarch with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Friday morning.
The one-hour session took place at 9am, before the cabinet meeting, in La Zarzuela Palace, in the office formerly occupied by his father Juan Carlos.
Details of the king’s upcoming schedule of engagements have also been gradually emerging: he and Queen Letizia will meet with victims of terrorism on Saturday, and their first official trip abroad will be to the Vatican, where they will meet with Pope Francis.
Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo has confirmed that after that the king and queen will travel to Morocco, France and Portugal, though no dates were provided.
Felipe VI is also scheduled to speak at the United Nations General Assembly in September to defend Spain’s bid for a seat on the Security Council in 2015 and 2016.
When he was crown prince, Felipe de Borbón visited every country in Latin America except for Cuba. He has traveled abroad over 200 times.
