A 26-year-old Spanish woman was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Madrid municipality of Torrejón de Ardóz after she stabbed and killed her husband.

The woman, identified by the authorities as María Ángeles M. M., admitted stabbing Miguel Ángel S. V., who was aged 29 and was also Spanish. She called the emergency services herself after committing the crime, and explained what had happened.

María Ángeles reportedly told the police that her husband was a regular user of cocaine. At midnight he is reported to have woken up and stated that he wanted a hit of the drug. An argument ensued between the couple, and the victim punched his wife twice.

The woman told police that she then picked up a knife in order to defend herself from the attack.

When the emergency services arrived, the man was found to have knife wounds in his abdomen. Despite efforts to resuscitate him that lasted around 40 minutes, in the end all that the ambulance crew could do was to certify his death.

According to calculations by EL PAÍS, this homicide brings the number of violent deaths in the region so far this year to 28.
