Madrid government delegate Cifuentes gets all-clear after road accident

PP politician discharged after 34 days in hospital, including three weeks in intensive care

The central government delegate in Madrid, Cristina Cifuentes, has been discharged from hospital after suffering serious injuries in a road traffic accident on August 20. Cifuentes will continue her recovery at home, sources close to the Popular Party politician said, and follow a course of painkillers and specific exercises prescribed by doctors.

Cifuentes was hit by a motorist while traveling on a scooter in the center of Madrid last month, sustaining damage to her lungs and five broken ribs. Cifuentes was riding in the bus lane, as motorcyclists are permitted to do, when a BMW collided with her at a turning. The driver of the car tested negative for alcohol.

On Monday, via her Twitter account, Cifuentes thanked hospital staff for their attention and citizens for their concern. “All my gratitude to the doctors, nurses, auxiliaries, porters and cleaning staff at La Paz,” she wrote. “And from my heart thanks to all the people who have been concerned for my health. These are silly accidents that happen but that can have serious consequences.”
