A press photographer was among two people gored during the celebration of this year’s controversial Torneo del Toro de la Vega bull hunt in the town of Tordesillas, Valladolid province, on Tuesday.

Pedro Armestre of Agence France-Presse suffered a “not serious but significant” goring, according to Tordesillas’ mayor, José Antonio González of the Socialist Party. A colleague said Armestre, who is out of danger but was set to undergo surgery in Valladolid on Tuesday afternoon, was trying to protect himself behind a tree when he was gored in the right leg by the 580-kilo bull.

One other person, who has not yet been identified, was also treated by the Red Cross after being gored at the event, in which thousands of people on horseback and on foot compete to slaughter a bull let loose in the town and driven to an open field.

Among those in attendance were around 100 animal rights activists, who held up placards condemning the event as a medieval ritual.
