Judge fixes civil bail of 6 million euros for wife of ex-PP treasurer
Amount will serve as compensation in event Bárcenas' spouse is found guilty
High Court Judge Pablo Ruz has imposed a civil liability bail of six million euros on the wife of former Popular Party treasurer Luis Bárcenas, Rosalía Iglesias.
The amount will serve as compensation in the event that Iglesias is found guilty of charges of tax crimes, falsifying documents, money laundering and attempted fraud.
Iglesias has been provisionally charged as part of the ongoing Gürtel corruption investigation, an offshoot of which is the secret ledgers allegedly kept by her husband detailing illegal party financing and cash payments to top PP officials. Bárcenas is in preventive custody and also faces civil liability of 42.3 million euros, which he has yet to find. Ruz has embargoed Bárcenas’ assets.
