Some town councilors may get ax, others lower wages

Government reform of local administration aims to make savings of over seven billion euros

The government hopes to save some 7.12 billion euros over the next three years by cutting salaries to local officials and eliminating some offices.

The Cabinet approved a draft bill on Friday that aims to make deep cuts to local administrations. Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro said Friday that under the proposed law, the number of full-time paid local councilors will be reduced to 12,000 from 68,285 over several years.

Wages for city mayors will be limited to 100,000 euros while mayors of towns with less than 1,000 inhabitants will no longer be paid. Full-time councilors in cities will be reduced through 2015 according to population, the minister said.
