Carlos Sainz forced to bow out of Dakar Rally
Engine failure on Red Bull buggy bring Spaniard’s desert travails to an end for this year
Spanish rally driver Carlos Sainz saw his bid to win the Dakar Rally crumble into the desert sand dunes on Thursday, when the engine of his Qatar Red Bull buggy finally gave up the ghost.
The 2010 Dakar winner has been plagued with problems in these early stages of the race, which is being run until January 20 in the deserts of Peru, Argentina and Chile.
After losing more than two hours to electrical problems in Wednesday’s stage, Sainz had declared that he would be racing to support his teammate, Nasser Al-Attiyah.
But he was forced to throw in the towel on Thursday at the 181st kilometer of the stage, which ran between Arica and Calama, in Chile. At press time Sainz was awaiting a helicopter to take him back to base camp.
