Metro official and Swiss au pair killed in test track crash
Two survivors of Tuesday's accident escape with minor injuries.
An executive from Madrid Metro, José Manuel Pérez García, has been killed in an accident on a test track in the Fuenlabrada district of the capital, company sources confirmed. Also in the driver's cabin of the three-carriage train were Pérez's partner and their four-year-old daughter, who were both taken to hospital with light injuries, and the girl's Swiss au pair, 17, who was also killed.
The accident took place on Tuesday evening at the Loranca Metro station on Line 12, where a straight stretch of line some hundreds of meters long is used to test, clean and repair model 8000 trains - Madrid Metro's newest.
According to sources close to the company, access to the driver's compartment is forbidden without authorization and starting the operating systems requires a special key, which also switches off the train's safety mechanisms.
According to preliminary investigations, upon reaching the end of the test track the train collided with a security barrier and then the earth bank beyond it, completely destroying the cabin.
