Spaniards hang up on big cellphone providers

Orange and Movistar suffer most as people swap operators in record numbers

Ramón Muñoz

The crisis is forcing Spaniards to make cost-cutting moves, and one of those is to look for better cellphone deals. In January, 539,599 people changed cellphone companies — a record number, according to the Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT).

One of the major reasons, the CMT says, is that customers can now switch companies while keeping the same phone number.

Orange and Movistar were the companies who lost the most customers during the first month of the year while Vodafone and Yoigo took on more clients. Cellphone operators that rent bandwidth from the major providers also appear to be gaining more customers.
