Basque premier: "End of ETA is not a question of bargaining"
Patxi López lauds "first summer" without terrorist threat, but warns of deal-amking with 'abertzale' left
"The end of ETA is not a question of bargaining, it needs to disappear completely without any kind of conditions. When it has ceased to exist will be the moment to see how we can build co-existence after almost 900 assassinations."
Patxi López, the Socialist Basque regional premier, did not mince his words on his first day back at work after the summer vacation when asked about ETA's demand to have abertzale political platform Sortu legalized before disbanding definitively.
"For the first time we have enjoyed a summer without street violence and a terrorist threat," The lehendakari said. On Martín Garitano, the abertzale provincial chief of Gipuzkoa who caused outrage when he intimated that ETA attacks in Catalonia had been a tactical mistake, López said: "We should not turn this into a problem for everybody else. It is the abertzale left that has a problem. It needs to demand of ETA that it disappear." López has previously described Garitano as a "part-time democrat."
