Another Sunday on the podium for Fernando Alonso
Ferrari driver's third place sees title battle hot up
Jenson Button's 200th Grand Prix, which he won on Sunday in Hungary, was yet further evidence of the maturity and experience that the Briton has accumulated during his 11 years in Formula 1. Managing to keep a cool head during a chaotic wet-dry race, he cruised to victory, ahead of Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.
Vettel, who started from pole position, lost his lead thanks to a number of errors, but fought back hard, with the team's excellent tire choices helping him along the way. Button's teammate, Lewis Hamilton, looked like he would be the man to take the checkered flag, but a series of errors and later a penalty put paid to that, seeing him eventually cross the line in fourth.
Alonso put in another sterling performance, having fought his way up from fifth place on the grid to finish third. He has now finished the last four races on the podium, boosting his points haul and pushing him further up the table. Speaking after the race, the Spaniard said he was pleased with the result.
"I think we are confident we can do a good second part of the championship," he told the press. "The car has improved a lot, we are fighting for podiums, pole positions." The former world champion went on to point out that he is the driver who has scored the most points in July.
But with the summer break now in force until the Belgian Grand Prix, on August 28, Ferrari will have to come back strong if Alonso is to stand a chance of taking his third title. Vettel is still way out in the lead with 234 points. But his teammate Webber is on 149 and Hamilton is on 146. Alonso is currently just one point behind the Briton, meaning that second place in the championship is still up for grabs.
