ETA kidnap suspect arrested in Guipúzcoa
Former terrorist leader also suspected of attempt to assassinate King Juan Carlos
The Civil Guard on Wednesday arrested a former ETA leader under a High Court warrant in Irún, Guipúzcoa. Iñaki Gracia Arregui was wanted for the 1995 kidnap of prison guard José Antonio Ortega Lara, who was held hostage by ETA for two years.
Arregui, known as Iñaki de Rentería after the town he settled in on release from jail last year, was one of the suspects in the failed attempt to assassinate King Juan Carlos in 1995.
The Civil Guard located Arregui through documents seized in France, which included communications between Gorosti, the alias employed by Arregui, and the Bellotxa cell, which carried out the kidnapping.
Arregui was first arrested in France in 2000 and served eight years in prison there before being sent to Spain. He will appear in court in Madrid on Thursday.
