US arrests Rwandan for 1997 Spanish doctor killings
Former RPA Major Justus Majyambere detained in Washington
US authorities have arrested a former member of the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) who is wanted in Spain for allegedly ordering the killings of three Spanish aid workers in 1997.
Former RPA Major Justus Majyambere was arrested in Washington last week on immigration charges. Interpol contacted High Court Judge Fernando Andreu who had issued a warrant against Majyambere for his attack on a Doctors Without Borders health centerwhere heallegedly ordered the execution of Manuel Madrazo, Flors Sirera and Luis Valtueña in January 1997.
The three Spaniards were giving first aid to the survivors of an RPA massacre of 50 Hutus during the ethnic purges in Rwanda.
Majyambere and his men reportedly befriended the doctors, who days before they died had been shown the common graves where the Hutus had been buried. When they entered the doctors' home, they began shooting.
In addition, the High Court has also charged Majyambere and a further 40 Rwandans with genocide.
