Tax website swamped by rebate claimants

Site unable to cope with number of applications on first day in operation

The Spanish Tax Agency's (AETA) new fast-track internet method for annual declarations crashed on its first day in operation Monday as cash-strapped taxpayers anxious to get their hands on their rebates flooded the website.

Under the new arrangement, taxpayers can access a draft declaration prepared by the AETA by providing their tax identification number and a key reference number to their previous year's declaration. The agency then sends a text message with the reference number for this year's declaration, which can be accessed directly on the website.

Instead of the five minutes the agency promised it would take to complete the process, frustrated users yesterday lost several hours of their time. The AETA this year will return 11.167 billion euros in excess taxes retained at source.
