Foreign debt level drops for first time in 10 years
Analysts say fall marks inevitable beginning of end to era of excessive borrowing
For the first time in a decade Spain's foreign debt dropped last year, by 1.2 percent. Bank of Spain figures show that foreign debt reached its highest point at 1.79 trillion euros in March of 2010.
But by the close of December, the figure had dropped to 1.74 trillion euros.
"The reduction of foreign debt was something to be expected, and was essential in the long period of adjustments that lie ahead," said Ángel Laborda, economic director of Funcas, the saving banks think-tank foundation. "In reality we have just begun, and at a very modest rate," he added.
In relative terms, foreign debt is now at 164 percent of GDP, while in 2009 it stood at 167 percent of GDP.
Analysts say that the economic crisis has put a stop to a decade of excessive borrowing abroad.
They also say that the most striking aspect about the Spanish economy is not its foreign debt levels - which in many developed nations stand at more than 167 percent of GDP - but how fast it tripled: from 600 billion in 2002 to 1.76 trillion euros in 2009.
