September shows: ‘Sex Education’ on Netflix, ‘The Morning Show’ on Apple TV+ and other premieres
A review of the series that stand out this month on Apple TV+, Max, Netflix and elsewhere
The usual fall avalanche of TV premieres to which the entertainment industry has accustomed viewers will not be as plentiful this year; September’s offerings provide proof of that. The writers’ and actors’ strikes have left U.S. broadcast television with hardly any series, and, while still well-stocked, streaming platforms are being cautious with premieres to prevent the consequences of a work stoppage that could still drag on for weeks.
This month, the fantasy show The Wheel of Time returns with its second season this Friday on Amazon Prime Video. The Walking Dead universe continues to expand with The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (September 11 on AMC), this time moving the action to France. The Spanish miniseries Burning Body, based on a real crime, debuts on Netflix. Meanwhile, The Continental (September 22 on Peacock) delves into the John Wick universe to explore the origins of the iconic hotel. And young superheroes and students at Godolkin University are the main characters in Gen V (September 29 on Amazon Prime Video), a spin-off series of The Boys.
Of this month’s premieres and returning series, we recommend giving the following shows a try.
Burning Body
In May 2017, a burned car is discovered in the Foix (Barcelona) swamp, revealing a corpse inside. The body turns out to be that of a Guardia Urbana (urban police) agent. The investigation focuses on the officer’s social circle and especially on his partner, Rosa Peral. Little by little, an entire network of toxic relationships, manipulation, sexual scandals and violence within the police force comes to light. Úrsula Corberó portrays Rosa Peral, while Quim Gutiérrez plays Albert López, another agent with whom Rosa had a relationship. Based on a true story, it has all the elements (death, sex, deceit, crime...) of an addictive series. And for those who want to learn more about the real case, the documentary Rosa Peral’s Tapes premieres on the same day (also on Netflix).
Where and when to watch it? The eight episodes will be available on the 8th on Netflix.
The Morning Show
After a well-received first season, the second season of the series starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon received a more tepid reception. The new episodes will try to recapture the show’s former magic by wiping the slate clean and putting the characters in new places, with new loyalties and uncertain futures. A tech mogul (played by Jon Hamm), who takes the main characters into space, is set to buy the network where the action takes place. Billy Crudup, Julianna Margulies and Mark Duplass return to the cast of this show, which reveals the tug-of-war that is occurring in a news television channel’s backroom.
Where and when to watch it? The first two episodes will be available on September 13 on Apple TV+, followed by a new one each week.
Sex Education
The fourth season of this teen dramedy moves the main characters to a new high school, where they will discover an even more open and progressive environment than the one they are used to. Meanwhile, Maeve lives her dream at a prestigious university in the United States, taking classes from a renowned writer, while Otis pines for her from afar. The series, which features the main characters’ exploration of sex and feelings between them, has reached its final season in fine form. Sex Education has become one of Netflix’s most outstanding British productions because of its funny and intelligent scripts, charismatic actors and character development.
Where and when to watch it? The fourth season premieres on September 21 on Netflix.
Starstruck
The script and the leading actor’s performance shine in this British romantic comedy, which has broken down the genre’s clichés to reinvent them and use them to its advantage. Through the vicissitudes of life, Jessie, a somewhat disastrous and very sarcastic woman, ends up in a relationship with a very famous actor. The love story has been evolving, and in the third season we meet Jessie two years after distance has put an end to the relationship. As she sees her friends’ lives moving forward, she feels that she is falling behind and wonders what she really wants. The show is a gem that may appeal to both fans of romantic comedies and to those who shy away from them; the latter may enjoy Starstruck’s smart dialogue and hilarious situations anyway.
Where and when to see it? The third season premieres on September 28 on Max.
