2023 Golden Globes nominations announced: Who is in the running?

The nominations for the 80th edition of the Golden Globes were announced Monday at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Among the nominees are Cuban-Spanish actress Ana de Armas, for her role in the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, and Mexican actor Diego Luna for his performance in the TV show Andor, which is part of the Star Wars franchise. Luna is the fourth Latino actor to be nominated for best male performance in a television series. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio has also been nominated for Best Animated Movie.

The 2023 edition of the Golden Globes is hoping to bounce back after last year’s controversies over the lack of diversity in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of 87 international journalists who vote on the awards. When the scandal broke, not a single member of the association was Black. Adding to the backlash was a Los Angeles Times report, which revealed the questionable credentials of the reporters, and how they are courted by studios.

This year, the nominees were voted by 96 members and, for the first time, 103 international voters. “The new voters were recruited from international industry organizations, well-known foreign film festivals and journalism professionals. This diverse voting group represents 62 different countries around the world,” according to the Golden Globes website. “Combined with the current membership, the total Golden Globe Awards voting body is now 52% female, 51.8% racially and ethnically diverse, with 19.6% Latinx, 12.1% Asian, 10.1% Black, and 10.1% Middle Eastern.”
