The Kansas City Chiefs will face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 2024 on Sunday, Feb. 11, at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. The Chiefs, back in the Super Bowl for the fourth time in five seasons, finished the regular season 11-6 and won two road playoff games with a strong defense, while the 49ers, who finished 12-5, got back from a 17-point deficit in the NFC championship game, beating Detroit. The teams previously met in Super Bowl LIV, which the Chiefs won 31-20.
The San Francisco 49ers have a good shot of winning the Super Bowl due to the impressive performance of quarterback Brock Purdy, known as “Mr. Irrelevant,” who, despite being the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, led the team to a 12-5 record and orchestrated comebacks in the playoffs. Purdy set records for yards per attempt, passer rating, and QBR in 2023. The 49ers also feature NFL rushing leader Christian McCaffrey, who has been exceptional in the postseason with 188 yards and multiple touchdowns.
On the other hand, the Kansas City Chiefs are strong contenders, having defeated Miami, Buffalo, and Baltimore on their way to secure a Super Bowl spot. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been outstanding, completing a high percentage of passes with no interceptions in recent playoff games. Mahomes, a two-time regular-season and Super Bowl MVP, has a history of success in postseason play, including a comeback victory against the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. His impressive postseason record includes 14 victories over the last six years.
Beyond the game, the Super Bowl LIV could also win more audience because of the possible attendance of the most important pop singer in the country at the moment, Taylor Swift, who has become a talking point in the NFL after she and Chief’s key player Travis Kelce began a relationship. Around 17.9 million people watched NFL games this season according to Nielsen, which represents a 7% increase from the previous year. The NFL said that this is the highest regular-season average since 2015, both in television and streaming.
Although the singer will perform four shows of her Eras Tour in Japan, she is expected to attend. The Embassy of Japan in Washington D.C. issued a statement affirming that, “despite the 12-hour flight and 17-hour time difference, the Embassy can confidently Speak Now to say that if she departs Tokyo in the evening after her concert, she should comfortably arrive in Las Vegas before the Super Bowl begins”.
