Kate Beckinsale, from presenting the Golden Globes to spending that night in the hospital
The actress attended the gala on Sunday, but later uploaded photographs showing her at a medical center with her family, still dressed in her ceremony clothes. Her stepfather had been very ill for months
Last Sunday, actress Kate Beckinsale was one of the last people to walk on the red carpet of the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, California, at the Golden Globes ceremony. Wearing a dress made up of a silver sequin body and a transparent white tulle skirt from Atelier Zuhra, very high platform shoes and her hair tied up in a ponytail with small black bows, she showed off the classic, very Hollywood-like glamour that is so often associated with her. Inside the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton, Beckinsale teamed up with actor Don Cheadle to announce the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama, which went to Lily Gladstone, the star of Killers of the Flower Moon, by Martin Scorsese. However, Beckinsale’s presence at the celebration was short-lived: she left the hotel quickly to go to a hospital where she spent a good part of the awards night. It seems that her stepfather, TV director Roy Battersby, had been ill for months. Later comments suggest the outcome has not been good.
It all started when Beckinsale posted a couple of images of herself on Instagram, where she has 5.6 million followers, showing her in a hospital room. She was still dressed in her tulle dress, and still wearing her huge silver platforms. “Golden Globes 2024 start to end,” she wrote alongside those photographs. “Thank you and thank you for your supportive texts all the way through. That was so kind xx” When someone asked her what happened, she responded: “Nothing funny, I’ll tell you that.”
Beckinsale’s father, the actor and singer Richard Beckinsale, died in the late 1970s of a heart attack at the age of 31. Her mother, the actress Judy Loe, was widowed when Kate was five years old. Almost two decades later, in 1997, on her 50th birthday, Loe remarried. Kate maintained a close relationship with her stepdad, who suffered a heart attack this past December and has also recently suffered two different types of cancer, according to the British media The Daily Mail. The couple, originally from London, had been living in Los Angeles with Kate. According to a source close to the family, the actress has been taking care of both of them for almost a year: “Kate has been caring for her parents, who both have serious illnesses, for most of the year. She brought them to her home in LA and has made looking after them her number one priority.’
In August, the actress also uploaded a post to her social media where she encouraged her followers to have fun, to live, to do “whatever makes you happy at all times.” The images showed that she had lost her cat, but also that she was accompanying someone older to the hospital to undergo various medical tests.
On Wednesday, Beckinsale’s account showed a blackened image, without comments. In that post, many of her followers expressed condolences and lamented the death of her stepfather, even though she had not published anything about it. The actress is very active on her Instagram account and often answers people, whether famous or not, who engage with her, but on this occasion she has barely done so. “I am very sorry for your loss,” writes a couturier friend who lost his father. “I know you understand,” she replied.
