Unemployment falls by 94,727 in June
Social Security affiliations rise by 35,085, surpassing level when PM came to power in 2011
The number of registered unemployed in Spain fell in June by 94,727 people. The month ended with a little over 4.1 million out of a job.
Meanwhile, Social Security affiliations – a measure of job creation – grew by an average of 35,085 applicants, according to Labor Ministry figures. This brings the total number of contributors to the national welfare system up to 17.25 million, back above the 17.22 million affiliations when Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy took office in December 2011.
However, it bears noting that June is traditionally a good month for the Spanish job market because it marks the start of the summer season, whereas December is a bad month.
Compared with the same period last year, joblessness is slightly higher this year – although by just 24 people – and seasonally adjusted Social Security affiliations fell by 2,000.
Hirings were up in June, although permanent contracts represented only 7.3% of the total of 1.7 million.
