Woman in Gold stars Helen Mirren as real-life Jewish refugee Maria Altmann, who, 60 years after fleeing Vienna and the Nazis, fought the Austrian government to try to win back the art treasures – including a renowned Gustav Klimt portrait – robbed from her family by the Third Reich. Accompanied by young lawyer Ryan Reynolds, her journey for justice leads her all the way to the US Supreme Court but also to confront the horrors of her past. Directed by Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn), the movie also features Daniel Brühl, Katie Holmes, Max Irons and Charles Dance.

In a role that takes him a long way from Downton Abbey, Dan Stevens stars in thriller The Guest as an ex-soldier who rocks up at the house of the Peterson family claiming to be an army buddy of their son, who was killed in Afghanistan. Friendly and polite, he’s invited to stay and inveigles himself into their lives, but it’s not long before he reveals a far more disturbing side. Adam Wingard, director of 2011 horror You’re Next, calls the shots.

Channeling plummy voiced British comedy star Terry-Thomas, Johnny Depp stars as a devil-may-care art dealer on the trail of a stolen painting concealing a clue to a Nazi bank account in comic action adventure Mortdecai. Based on Kyril Bonfiglioli’s comic novels, the movie has been savagely panned by critics, despite an all-star cast that also features Paul Bettany, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn, Oliver Platt and Jeff Goldblum.

Leader of the pack

Wolf Totem sees French Name of the Rose director Jean-Jacques Annaud return to the same mix of drama and nature doc that he explored in 1988’s The Bear and 2004 tiger tale Two Brothers. Set in 1969, this Chinese-language movie follows student Chen Zhen as he’s posted out to Inner Mongolia to teach shepherds and learns about their special bond with the local wolves.

Felices 140 is an ensemble Spanish comedy featuring Maribel Verdú as a woman who decides to bring together her close family and friends to celebrate her 40th birthday in a country house. But the atmosphere turns more than a little strange when she reveals she has just won a €140 million lottery jackpot and the guests start jostling for a share of the pie. Director Gracia Querejeta’s film also stars Antonio de la Torre, Eduard Fernández, Nora Navas, Marian Álvarez, Ginés García Millán, Alex O’Dogherty and Paula Cancio.
