A 24-year-old man turned himself in to the police on Wednesday after a video went viral that showed him kicking a woman who then fell on her back on a street in Barcelona.

Mario García Montealegre presented himself at National Police headquarters in Talavera de la Reina, Toledo province, after receiving a summons.

The incident occurred on February 22 when a friend recorded García running up behind a woman standing on Diagonal Avenue in Barcelona and kicking her in the back of her leg. The person who taped the incident can be heard laughing hysterically.

At least five people helped police identify the attacker

“But what do you think you’re doing?” asked the 48-year-old victim, who was taken by surprise as she fell backwards and sprained her ankle. She later filed charges with Barcelona police.

After the video was posted online, García began removing all traces of himself from the social networks.

At least five people came forward to help identify the attacker after the Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police force, asked the public for help.

“We have received multiple messages from internet users who gave us important information about this person,” said sources from the police Technology Research Unit (UIT).

Police sources said the suspect was facing a charge of “unprovoked aggression” and that the case had been turned over to a judge for further investigation.
